How Often Should You Wash Bed Sheets?

A weekly sheet wash is a common household routine, but there is no universal scientific deadline after which sheets suddenly become unsafe.

Why sheets need regular washing

During sleep, bedding can collect sweat, body oils, skin cells, hair, cosmetic or skincare products, pet hair and dander, dust, and environmental debris.

When weekly washing makes sense

Washing about once a week is a practical starting routine for many households, especially if you sweat heavily at night, sleep with pets, have oily skin, spend a lot of time in bed, or simply prefer very fresh bedding.

When you may wash more often

Wash sooner when bedding is visibly soiled, after certain illness situations, after a spill, or when contamination requires it.

What about every two weeks?

Some people who shower before bed, do not sweat heavily, keep pets out of the bed, and use bedding in a clean environment may find a longer interval acceptable.

How to wash sheets

  1. Check the care label.
  2. Separate incompatible colors and fabrics.
  3. Avoid packing the washer too tightly.
  4. Use a properly measured detergent.
  5. Choose a temperature allowed by the label.
  6. Dry completely before making the bed or storing.

Do sheets need hot water?

Not automatically. Fabric-care instructions vary, and modern detergents can clean routine laundry at lower temperatures.

A routine you can maintain is better than an unrealistic rule you constantly postpone.
