How Often Should You Wash Towels?

There is no single towel-washing schedule that fits every household. A towel that dries quickly in a well-ventilated bathroom is different from one that stays damp, is shared by several people, or is used after a workout.

Bath towels

A bath towel used by one person and hung so it dries completely between uses can often be reused several times before washing. Wash sooner if it smells musty or sour, stays damp for long periods, is visibly soiled, is shared, or was used during an illness or contamination concern.

Hand towels

Hand towels are touched frequently and often by multiple people. They may need washing more often than personal bath towels.

Kitchen towels and dishcloths

These can encounter food, grease, raw-food contamination, and wet surfaces. Treat them based on what they actually contacted.

Gym and workout towels

Sweat-soaked towels should be allowed to dry and laundered promptly. Leaving them damp in a closed gym bag encourages odor.

During illness

Follow authoritative household-laundry guidance appropriate to the illness or contamination concern. Wash hands after handling dirty laundry.

How to keep reusable towels fresher

Hang them fully open rather than bunched, give them airflow, do not throw soaking-wet towels into a closed hamper, measure detergent correctly, avoid overloading the washer, and dry completely before folding.

Good towel hygiene is less about counting uses perfectly and more about controlling moisture, soil, and cross-contamination.
